Don’t understand the difference between presets and spaces and how to use them.

The items you see under “Available Spaces” are the widgets that you currently have on your home screen. If you have 5 KWGT widgets in your home screen, then you’re supposed to get 5 items in the Available Spaces screen. This is basically where you can switch between widgets to edit.
Presets are just saved/exported widgets. If you designed a widget yourself and exported it, the exported file is the preset.
