KLWP not showing image from URL

Suddenly for the past many days the KLWP has stopped showing puctures via url.
I had set a background to images from wikipedia. it used to work perfect for years and now without me changing anything there images just stopped showing.

My first guess would be that Wikipedia may have changed something on their end. Does the URL work on its own?

Yes the URL works on its own. Also the text/captions are being captured correctly. Only the image doesn’t show.

Hi there,

IMO, Wikipedia protects the image from being used in embedding. This is usually called: Hotlink Protection

Hotlink protection prevents other websites from using your media files, like images and videos, by directly linking to them on your server, which consumes your bandwidth and server resources.

So, the only way to get the image is by directly download it rather that using its link from an app.

I tried some random image URLs from Wikipedia and a few other websites, some URLs can be used as KLWP background and some others don’t work. And in The case of Wikipedia, none works.

SUGGESTION
It would be better to download the image to the phone and use it locally as the background.

I hope this would help.

Yes, I think Wikipedia changes how the image URLs can be accessed.

Maybe it used to work, but now it protects the image URLs from being used in embedding instead of directly download the image file.

No I’m sure nothing has changed there.
In fact i tried 2 different UsrLs

  1. From Google images
  2. From news photos

It just doesn’t show any picture.

Hi there,
Would you mind sharing the URL that you cannot access from KLWP?

If nothing is changed in the preset and no changes in KLWP, then it is very possible the issue is from the URL provider.

I just retried linking an image from 3 different sources, one of them is Wikipedia.

REFERENCE • Hotlinking from Wikimedia servers

Hotlinking
Hotlinking is allowed from Wikimedia servers, but is not generally recommended: this is because anyone could change, vandalise, rename or delete a hotlinked image. On your own server, you will have control over what is served.

So, it would be better to download the image file then link it locally.

The image URL cannot be opened when it’s used as the background in KLWP.

It also cannot be opened directly. I think the image is protected.

Thank you, they might have changed it only recently. For > 6 years i was using this and the image used to show without fail. In fact i had set it to change randomly every 15 minutes.

I would be grateful if someone can guide me on how to download the images.
