How do I create a texting messenger widget that can show my text messages in a kind of "In box" format? Android used to have one built in, but the new 9 update removed it, and I downloaded Kustom to try to recreate it.

At this moment I don't think that you can achieve this with any app. Android removed the option to other apps to read your calls or messages for security policies.What you can make is use the "ni" codes to show the text of the notifications that you have in your notification panel.
Put a text, enter in the text, and select ni codes, here you have the option to show the text of the different notifications,
